How Heston transformed Weston into “Afternoon Tea Manor”
In January we welcomed Heston Blumenthal and his team to film the Afternoon Tea experience at Weston for part of his new series, Heston’s Great British Food.
We had met Heston and the production team before back in September 2013 when they required a location for an insert in the Pudding School episode but the shots here at Weston didn’t make the final cut – so we were delighted when they got back in touch to turn Weston into “Afternoon Tea Manor”.
Famed for his visionary creations we were certainly looking forward to what would be in store as the production team arrived and turned the cellar into a smugglers den for the adulteration of tea, the Library was transformed into Heston’s Casino and his tribute to the Earl of Sandwich whilst the Orangery was filled with classic Edwardian furniture to take centre stage of the experience.
The creative department set to work bringing the story alive and some of Heston’s team from the Fat Duck took up residence in our kitchen to create the wonderful sandwiches that are in fact cakes and cakes that are sandwiches. The contributors enjoyed tucking into edible playing cards, casino chips, plates and even teapots! We also enjoyed getting to taste some of the creations on offer – with the Victoria Sandwich edible plate being a particular favourite amongst the team!
Heston’s team and the production company were fabulous to work with and fully respected the House and its treasures and it was wonderful to see the finished programme on Channel 4.
